Settled in 1884 and incorporated as a city in 1974, Sanibel Island’s total area is 33.25 square miles, which is 16.12 square miles of land and 17.13 square miles of water. The island constitutes the entire city, and the residents established the Sanibel Comprehensive Land Use Plan to assure a balance between future development and the island’s ecology preservation.
Sanibel is popular with tourists because of its famous shell beaches as well as over half of the island being wildlife refuges. The largest of those is the J. N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. There is also the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, the Sanibel Historical Village, the Sanibel Sea School, and various museums.
